We asked our upcoming speakers a series of questions to get to know them a little better in advance of their presentation. In this post, we’re featuring Dr. Mary Guinan, medical detective and women’s health advocate.
What was your reaction when you learned you were chosen as a speaker for TEDxAM18?
I was delighted and very surprised. I really don’t know who nominated me or why. I hope I can use this opportunity wisely.
Who is an inspiration or mentor who has influenced your work?
The American Medical Women’s Association and many of its leaders have had the most influence on my work. One of its purposes is to ensure reproductive health care for all women.
What is your favorite TED or TEDx Talk and why?
Aric Hartment: “Our treatment of HIV has advanced, why hasn’t the stigma changed.” He is doing something to reduce the stigma as well as helping gay men to deal with HIV.
How does what you wanted to be when you grew up compare with what you’re doing today?
I always wanted to be a physician, although it was very difficult for women to be accepted to medical school in the sixties. I was rejected many times but finally was successful.
If you could pick one person to present a TED talk, who would you choose? Why?
Melinda Gates, because she is using her influence and Foundation to assure reproductive healthcare, including contraception for women in many parts of the world.
You can see (and meet) Dr. Guinan when she presents at the TEDxAmoskeagMillyard event on June 2, 2018. Register now.
